KSU Study Identifies Novel Biomarkers for Predicting Cardiovascular Risk in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
Researchers at the Obesity Research Center at the College of Medicine, King Saud University, have made a significant scientific advancement by identifying promising biomarkers that may enable the early prediction of cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes. The findings could improve cardiovascular risk assessment and support the development of more personalized strategies for disease prevention and management.
The study comes at a time when both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease continue to pose major global public health challenges, with cardiovascular complications remaining the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among people living with diabetes.
The study was led by Professor Assim A. Alfadda, Director of the Obesity Research Center, and aimed to investigate the relationship between platelet-related biomarkers and the risk of cardiovascular disease among Saudi patients with type 2 diabetes.
Using a prospective longitudinal study design, the research team followed patients over time while evaluating a comprehensive panel of clinical and laboratory parameters, including biomarkers associated with platelet activation and inflammation, to identify factors capable of predicting future cardiovascular events.
The findings demonstrated that reduced platelet count together with elevated Platelet Factor 4 (PF4) levels were independent predictors of cardiovascular disease, even after adjusting for conventional risk factors such as age, sex, duration of diabetes, medications, comorbidities, and smoking status.
The study further revealed that platelet activation and the associated inflammatory response may occur before the onset of clinical cardiovascular symptoms, highlighting the potential of these biomarkers as early indicators for identifying patients at increased cardiovascular risk. Incorporating these molecular markers into routine clinical assessment could improve personalized patient monitoring, facilitate earlier intervention, and enhance treatment strategies.
The researchers also emphasized that combining these biomarkers with conventional clinical risk assessment tools may significantly improve the accuracy of cardiovascular risk prediction and help guide therapeutic decisions, particularly in selecting antidiabetic therapies that provide cardiovascular protection. They called for larger validation studies to establish the clinical utility of these biomarkers in routine medical practice.
Professor Assim A. Alfadda noted that the findings represent an important step toward improving the early detection of cardiovascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes and advancing precision medicine through biomarker-based risk assessment.
